The 2010/2011 season ends.

Our Toastmaster season has come to an end and congratulations are extended to Kieran Coffey who brought his own brand of dynamism to proceedings as president for the past year. Anthony Galvin as Toastmaster introduced the two prepared speeches for last nights meeting. Michael Murphy gave us an insight into the world of lenses in a most enthusiastic and professional manner in a speech entitled Cycle Time. It is becoming apparent that Toastmasters has been of great benefit to Michael. Kieran Coffey presented a lively stage 7 speech entitled NLP, which had us all intrigued. It is the acronym for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Mike Lynch conducted Topics session with the Queens visit making up most of the varied contributions. Macroom Toastmasters will re-commence in September where a warm welcome will be extended to all.

Two final points:

Some members are meeting up on Friday 27th, 9PM in TP Cotters bar to toast the year end.

When an opportunity for employment presents itself, you’ve got to be ready. Making a good first impression, whether in a job interview or at a chance meeting, is all-important. If this is an area in which you already feel confident, good for you. However, for most of us, this is an area in which there is always room for improvement.

Attending Toastmaster’s meetings will help you to become comfortable in interview-like situations. Specifically it will help you:

Prepare properly for Interviews.
Structure your thoughts clearly and easily.
Allow you to articulate the benefits you can offer to a potential employer.
Handle difficult and unexpected questions calmly.
Evaluate your efforts allowing you to improve your presentation.

Perhaps the most valuable benefit of attending Toastmaster’s meetings for the potential interviewee is Practice! The best way to prepare for Interview situations is to place yourself in similar situations. Allow your brain to become used to dealing with the pressure of having to speak, even on topics with which you may not be that familiar. With Practice it gets easier, and your confidence will grow.

We are already into March and only a few months remain before Summer is upon us. In the mean time, while the weather is still slightly chilly, why not make the most of being indoors… By attending a Toastmaster’s meeting!

Benefits include (but are not limited to):

Witnessing funny, dramatic and often moving speeches.
Meeting new like minded people.
Seeing how other people overcome their fear of public speaking.
The famous Tea and/or Coffee plus Biscuits at half-time!

Better than a Leader’s Debate!

Just a quick post to let you know we will be meeting at 8PM in the Castle Hotel, the Square, Macroom on Thursday 28th, February 2011.

A speech or two, some craic, a cup of tea. Its better than a Leader’s Debate!

Great start to 2011

For our first meeting of 2011 we had a great attendance and we welcomed along a couple of new guests. Pat Connolly was at his best acting as Topics Master for the evening with a wide and diverse range of topics. Some of the discussions varied from trying to sell obscure timber creations to the advantages of town criers and coastal foghorns.

We had two prepared speeches for the evening. The first from Mike Lynch was a most interesting factual account of when Brian Boru came and did battle in our town of Macroom in 987AD. The second speech presented by Kris Muelemans was a hilarious culinary speech based on the ‘Secret of the Saltimbocca’.

Edel O’Donoghue will be presenting her Ice Breaker (that is, her first speech) at our next meeting on the 27^th January. So for an evening of great craic and a chance to start on those New Year resolutions why not come along to the Castle Hotel at 7.50.
